The election happened today, September 15th, at the 22nd General Assembly of the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) that has been running since September 11th in Chengdu, China. Cape Verde is represented in this event by the Minister of Economics and Employment, José Gonçalves.
It is remembered that our country presented its official candidacy to the Executive Board of WTO on 12 March of the current year.

Six months after the official announcement of his candidacy, Cape Verde was elected a member of the Executive Council (EC) of the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) for a four-year term in the course of the 22. General Assembly of that organisation that runs in Chengdu, China. An election that took place this morning, 15, and that coincidentally was chaired by the Minister of Economics and Employment, Dr. José da Silva Gonçalves, as Vice-President of the General Assembly.
In a first reaction, Minister José Gonçalves said that "Cape Verde is congratulated on meriting the trust of members of the prestigious organization" by electing our country to Executive board member, as well as for the vice presidency of the General Assembly, aware of the Work carried out in recent months, with intense diplomatic negotiations with the members of the WTO.
The election of our country to integrate "the government" of WTO in the coming years, happens days after the Minister of Economics and Employment, Dr. José da Silva Gonçalves, have been elected Vice-President of the General Assembly of this specialized agency of the United Nations and the main International Tourism organisation aimed at promoting and developing the sector.
The assumption of a seat in the Executive Board of WTO, confers Cape Verde a privileged position on the international scene and strengthens its negotiating power in the definition of policies within this organisation, and can even influence positions that are beneficial for Cape Verde and To the African continent. To recall that as a member of the Executive Board, Cape Verde will be able to integrate one of the five subsidiary committees of the WTO Executive Body, in addition to also being able to take a prominent place in the African Regional Commission.
The new Executive Board meets tomorrow in Chengdu and we can still have more good news on the role and participation of Cape Verde in WTO.
It has not been unnoticed the prestige already achieved by the Minister of Economics and Employment of Cape Verde in his novel function having, in this quality, has been the only one until today to chair two general assembler sessions.
In addition to the election of the 26 members of the Executive Board of WTO, the CHENGDU General Assembly also elected the new Secretary-General for a period of three years, the Georgian Zurab Pololikashvili, with whom Minister José da Silva Gonçalves kept meeting at the beginning of the Session of the work that has been running since September 11th in China and that ends tomorrow, Saturday.
The election of Cape Verde to member of WTO emerges one year after our country has been chosen for the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Cape Verde was represented in the General Assembly of WTO in CHENGDU with a delegation in which they were part of the Ministry of Economics and Employment, Ambassadors Fernando Wahnon, Tania Romualdo (ambassador accredited in Beijing), and Joaquim Lopes Maia Júnior.
